The Daily Mail claimed Derby had been monitoring his progress. However, Burnley and Everton were also keen on the £1.5 million player.

Speaking to reporters, Rice admits Hamilton could move on after recently spending a week on trial at Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

We bring them in, develop them and then move them on when the time is right. It is what we do. Jamie’s been developed and he is still progressing. He has a long way to go but he has had an interesting start to his career. The club and I have a good relationship with Brighton and it was a good opportunity for him to go and show his talent. I believe he did well so we will need to see what happens.

Hamilton has made big strides this season in the Scottish Premiership.

He is tall, strong and comfortable in possession. He likes to play the ball out from the back, a feature of his game which Premier League scouts have picked up on.

At 18, he has an enormous amount of potential going forward.

Derby will need to strengthen their defence this summer. Loanee Matt Clarke will return to parent club Brighton, while Curtis Davies turns 35 before the end of the season.

The Rams are looking to build a promotion-winning side under manager Phillip Cocu. Hamilton, considering his age and current ability, would be a sound option.
