According to a report by Football Insider, Derby County are rivalling Preston North End, Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City for Hull City left-back Callum Elder.

The former Leicester City fullback helped the Tigers win the League One title.

Elder made 45 league appearances for Hull last season, posting an impressive nine assists as Grant McCann’s side bounced back to the Championship at the first attempt.

The former Australia U20 international’s superb form has caught the attention.

Football Insider claim Derby are among several Championship sides vying to sign the player, with Hull braced for bids as Elder enters the final year of his contract at the club.

Hull boss McCann has branded Elder an excellent player during this past season, telling the Hull Daily Mail how his blistering pace can cause the opposition all kinds of problems.

But despite Elder’s evident ability, Derby’s reported interest in the left-back comes as a surprise considering the club’s current options in that area at Pride Park.

Craig Forsyth has another year on his deal and remains a dependable figure, while youngster Lee Buchanan broke through last season and impressed on numerous occasions.

Manager Wayne Rooney claimed Buchanan was one of the best young talents in England, so it would be strange if he blocked his progress with the signing of another left-back.

Moreover, it remains to be seen what Rooney’s budget will be like this summer, while a new striker and couple of new central defenders surely tops Derby’s list of priorities.
