According to a summer report by Goal, Derby County, Norwich City and Sheffield United were in the hunt to sign goalkeeper Simon Sluga from HNK Rijeka.

The Rams were on the lookout for a new Scott Carson replacement.

Sluga was a surprise name to be linked with the Rams. Yet, his form for HNK Rijeka back in his native Croatia warranted the reported interest in the goalkeeper.

The 26-year-old won the Croatian Cup last year. Sluga saved a penalty in the final, and he later earned a call-up to the Croatian national squad following his excellent form.

Derby, however, were beaten to his signature by Championship newcomers Luton Town. A report in Rijeka Danas claimed the Hatters spent a club record £1.5 million to sign him.

Luton had money to spend after the sales of Justin James and Jack Stacey.

Sluga has since been a regular for Luton. He made his debut in the entertaining 3-3 draw with Middlesbrough on the opening day, showing both good and bad signs.

In his ten Championship outings, Luton have yet to keep a clean sheet and conceded 18 goals. However, Sluga has helped the side record three impressive wins.

The Hatters travel to Pride Park just one place and one point behind the Rams. Sluga will be keen to make an impression and show Derby what they missed out on.

The Rams signed Ben Hamer on loan from Huddersfield Town as Carson left to join Manchester City. But he has so far been unable to displace number one Kelle Roos.
