Mexican side Atlas have confirmed the signing of Luciano Acosta on their official Twitter page, ending any speculation of a potential move to Derby County.

The Rams were linked with the Argentine playmaker following his links to Wayne Rooney.

Acosta was a teammate of Rooney’s at DC United. With his contact in Washington expiring this month, he was on the lookout for a new club with a switch to Europe cited.

Speaking to Argentine radio last month, Acosta mentioned Derby as a potential option.

We are analyzing proposals with my representative, there is nothing defined yet. I’m waiting for Boca’s call.  Rooney before leaving told me he wants to take me to Derby County. Today I would go there, but if you call me from Boca, obviously the doors are always open.

Atlas, however, have now confirmed they have signed the player on their Twitter account.

Who is Luciano Acosta?

The 25-year-old came through the Boca Juniors academy. He is predominantly an attacking midfielder, and he made a name for himself following his form at DC United.

He scored 21 goals and grabbed numerous assists in the MLS. Alongside Rooney, he struck up a potent partnership in Washington and attracted heavy interest.

According to Acosta, he was set to join Paris Saint-Germain last January. The French giants were on the lookout for a short-term replacement for the injured Neymar. Acosta, however, claimed DC United pulled the plug on the deal shortly after completing his PSG medical.

Acosta could have been a stunning signing for Derby. Phillip Cocu’s side have lacked creativity all season, missing the talent of loan stars Mason Mount and Harry Wilson.

The Rams, however, will now have to pursue other options this coming January.
