Derby County hold an option to extend the contract of star defender Eiran Cashin for a further year.

According to the Derby Telegraph, it is ‘understood’ that the club do hold the option to extend Cashin’s deal by a further 12 months should they wish to do so.

Cashin is set to be offered a new contract by the club with his current contract expiring in the summer.

It is also expected that Premier League side Brighton will be coming back in for the Irishman in January, after failing to sign him in the summer.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of their clash with Bristol Rovers on Saturday afternoon at Pride Park, manager Paul Warne said that he expects bids for Cashin in the January transfer window, along with Max Bird.

“I am pretty much. There haven’t been any players who I’ve bid for in the summer in my own career that I’ve gone off three months later.

“Generally speaking, it is absence makes the heart grow fonder. Historically, for me and I can’t only speak for me, is that when I’ve had a bid turned down in the summer I try to return to it in January unless I know it’s absolutely impossible.

“It wouldn’t surprise me to have offers for Cashin and Birdy because they are very good players. I wouldn’t actually say it’s the same clubs that were rumoured to be interested in them during the summer either. It could be anyone.”

Derby have to exercise the option on Cashin

Derby are very lucky to have an option in his contract, in news that should delight all Derby fans.

Cashin is one of Derby’s most high-value assets, and is also arguably one of their best players.

He has been a rock at the back since the Rams dropped down to League One just over a year ago.

He won the club’s player of the season award last season.

If Derby do exercise their option, then they should be able to sell him in the summer for a big fee, which will come as a massive boost financially for the club.
