Paul Warne gives his verdict on whether the Championship needs VAR after Derby County controversy

Paul Warne has had his say on potentially introducing VAR to the Championship after Norwich City loss.

Despite falling to a 3-2 defeat against Norwich City in the Championship, Paul Warne will certainly be taking plenty of positives from the game.

Warne will definitely take a lot from the two unlikely goalscorers that kept his side in the game, with Craig Forsyth in particular showing that he can fill Callum Elder’s boots following the Australian international suffering an injury.

Rams’ Corey Blackett-Taylor also bagged his first goal for the club after coming off the bench and making an instant impact, something that could help him towards getting more game time with Derby County this campaign.

Unfortunately, refereeing decisions took centre-stage in the Derby County loss against Norwich City, and Warne has had his say after the away side were wrongfully awarded their first goal after the ball clearly went out of play.

Paul Warne on whether VAR should be introduced after Derby County controversy

The Derby County boss was understandably feeling let down by the officials after the 3-2 loss against Norwich City, with the Rams arguably losing out on a point, if not all three against the Canaries as a result of controversial refereeing calls.

Warne has had his say on the matter, and when being asked about whether he would like to see VAR introduced into the Championship, per BBC, he said: “Would I like to see it [VAR] after today? Of course. But I don’t know. I just think the game is getting more and more complicated.

“We are talking about inches here and there but even though I would have liked it today, you could argue our second goal was offside.

“If you do have VAR, it is still someone’s opinion.

[After Derby’s second goal] “I thought ‘here we go,’ it was like a game from the 1980s.

“I was going to send the goalkeeper up and I thought we were going to score a third but when it’s not your day, it’s not your day.”

Paul Warne must not linger over poor referee calls in Derby County loss

As the dust has now settled following the controversial Derby County loss against Norwich City, it will be crucial that Warne doesn’t let the poor luck of the recent decisions get to his side, nor should that cloud his judgement over what was a very solid performance from his side.

It was just the first defeat at home in the 2024/25 Championship campaign for Warne’s side, and the Derby County boss must dissect the odd negatives, particularly on the defensive side for his side, but certainly look to build on the firepower that they showed in the final third.

There is no doubt that up until this point there have been plenty of positive signs shown from Derby County at this point, and whilst they were unfortunate to miss out on an opportunity to cement their place in the top half, Warne must look to put the bad luck of the decisions behind them and work towards the next game against a somewhat out of form Sunderland side.
